Solo Date Night In

Decompression time.

Tonight I decided to treat myself to a date with…me. That’s right, I bought myself a bunch of flowers (including my favorites, peony), made myself a fabulous dinner, and sat down to a movie by my favorite director, Almodovar. So I cracked open a hearty red wine and went to it.

For dinner I picked up some of my favorite English peas, blistered some tomatoes with shallots and garlic, and simply sauteed them all together and finished it with Meyer lemon juice as my side dish. I didn’t happen to have any big, juicy hunks of meat in my fridge so the protein of the evening ended up being broiled tofu “steaks” topped with a button and king mushroom red wine cream sauce. I put rosemary into both the peas and the sauce to tie them together and a squeeze of the Meyer lemon into the mushroom sauce lightened it up a bit. But I couldn’t stop with just one course (this is a date after all), so I made a simple fruit and cheese plate for dessert. A decadently creamy Camembert paired with my favorite winter fruit, persimmons.

Man, I do know how to treat a lady. I think I’ll also take a bubbly bath to complete the evening before settling down with a good book and polishing off the bottle of vino.

I should do this more often.
